Tonight, I let out a big sigh of relief. Tomorrow, I’m going to celebrate. Yes, tomorrow is the first day of school but, while I’m certainly happy my kids will be occupied by someone other than me all day, that is not the biggest reason I am happy.
Last year’s school year didn’t end under ideal circumstances for my oldest son, Marty. Marty, frankly, had a hell of a year last year. While he kicked ass academically, he had health issues that kicked his ass. The tail end of his first semester was marred by a freaky reaction to his over the counter allergy medicine that left him in a wheelchair for a while. Then came the second semester. We made it past New Years and had him back on his feet. He was participating in his extracurriculars and was doing fabulously in his academics. We hit the end of February, just days past his birthday and he was felled by a migraine. It went on and on and on. We tried EVERYTHING…regular meds, IV meds, etc, etc, etc. The longer it went on, the more scared I was that we’d never get it to go away.
But, we finally found the magic bullet and got the migraine to break. The huge benefit is that the medicine that broke the migraine has also helped prevent another one. I’ve had a couple. Joey’s had a few short ones. Marty hasn’t had a single headache, let alone a migraine since late April/early May.
Getting Marty ready for this school year, listening to his normal fretting and worrying, watching his mini freak out when he couldn’t find something vital in his room (I found it in short order), all those things made me smile. Yeah, it drove me a little crazy. But, all those little things reminded me that my
boy young man is healthy again.
As far as I’m concerned, this is about as perfect a start to the school year as I could have.
