Perfect Moment Monday: We Got Him Back

imageToday was Memorial Day. Like many families, we had plans to spend the day together. My mom, dad, baby sis, and Jennifer joined Vic and me and the kids. We packed an amazing picnic lunch…cold chicken, homemade slaw, strawberries, melon, chips, and drinks…gathered up the balls and gloves, and headed out to Bond Park. The kids inhaled their lunch and then dragged Grandma and Aunt Becky through some of the nearby trails. Vic, my dad, and Joey spent some time tossing the ball around and a few our our group headed out onto the lake in canoes.

It was an average day.

It was a miraculous day.

For so long, my husband has been severely limited by his diabetes. For the past few years he has been in constant pain because of his neuropathy. Simply standing on his feet for more than a few minutes exacerbated the neuropathy pain to unbearable  levels.  It didn’t matter how much he wanted to be able to come on these family events, he was usually in too much pain to be able to participate let alone enjoy any of it.

Today, Vic felt good. Today, Vic was able to come on this average family outing. He was able to laugh and play and joke with the kids. Today, for the first time in years, Vic was able to play ball with Joey…which was the one thing Joey kept saying he wanted to be able to do after Vic’s surgery.

imageAnd, the day didn’t end there. After our picnic, we packed our stuff up and headed out to the IMAX theater at the Marbles Museum in Raleigh. We were going to see Star Trek: Into Darkness. Vic and I are both diehard Trek fans and have been so excited about the movie. Even after a full day, Vic was still feeling good enough to go to the movie and, what an incredible movie it was…WOW! After the movie, Vic was still able to walk the block and a half back to our parking space and his feet didn’t bother him at all.

Vic was able to laugh and joke and have fun all day long.

It was a normal holiday celebration and it was a miraculous day.

I got my husband back and the kids got their dad back.

It truly was a perfect day.

I am just over the moon about how well he is doing. He has his first post-surgery appointment today and I can’t wait for him to hear how much weight he has already lost.

This is so great to hear, Kristin. I’m so glad you’ve got your Vic back, and that you got to do such fun things over the summer kick-off weekend.

May there be many more fun weekends where this came from.
