16 Going On Grown-Up

16 years ago yesterday, my life changed. I woke up after only 2 hours of sleep when the first contraction hit. Rather than wake my husband up, I got up, took a shower, and french braided my hair. I decided that if I had to go through the indignities of labor, I was at least going to look good while it was happening. I thought I knew exactly how it was all going to go down, I was wrong.

imageAlmost 16 hours later, I was signing the papers so they could roll me down to the OR and deliver our son.  I didn’t get the picture perfect delivery I imagined. I ended up with a c-section instead. What I did end up with was the most amazing little baby who has grown into a truly amazing young man. Marty is thoughtful, helpful, considerate, and more responsible than most kids his age…at least he’s all those things most of the time.

Marty has been through a lot of challenges but he has shown a strength of character that I could only hope for and he has made it through them all. We’ve ended up having to explore alternate schooling options and we’ve found one that seems to be ideal for him. He is on track to graduate on time.

Marty is such a fabulous combination of me and Vic. In so many ways, Marty is like a male version of me. He has many of my facial features and even has my dad’s ears. Marty also has a ton of my personality quirks. Like me at that age, he doesn’t want to try something unless he knows he can do it well. He also tends to take things extremely personally (at that age I was also convinced everything was aimed at me too). He reacts to so many things the way I do and over the years, that has caused us to clash over some things…our battles over math were epic during my time home schooling him. From Vic, Marty got his coloring, his sense of humor, and his addiction to cheesy sci-fi movies.  I truly love that I can see elements of both of us in him.

These past 16 years have been an adventure and I can’t wait to see what the next what the next 16 years bring  with him.

It seems that on every birthday anniversary my children have had I take time to remember the 24 hours leading up to the moment each one entered this world. Does every mom do this? It’s a very special memory. Hope your son had a fabulous birthday and together you made some wonderful memories!
