Crash and Burn

ME: Hello

*TOCE: Yes ma’am, this is J from Sk8 Cary. I’d like to start out by saying Joey is ok…but his bike isn’t.

Yes, I did get a phone call that started this way…and, no, believe it or not, I didn’t panic.

This week, Joey is at the BMX bike camp sponsored by the Town of Cary and it’s being held at Sk8 Cary (a combination BMX/Skateboard facility). This is the third time he’s attended the camp so I’m sort of use to him coming home with bumps and bruises. But, this phone call was a little out of the norm. Evidently, Joey was trying to perform some trick and he crashed and burned.  He bounced back up but his bike ended up with a broken pedal and a broken rear brake lever. The Sk8 Cary employees were able to replace his pedal so he could keep riding today but, I had to run out to the local bike shop and buy a lever.

And, the reason this call didn’t freak me out or make me panic is that I know my son. Joey has been a bit of a daredevil from day one when it comes to his bike. Vic and I taught Joey the basics of riding a bike but, he truly mastered it on his own. Once he was able to stay up on two wheels for even a little while, Joey wanted to do it on his own. He spent days falling and getting up, falling and getting up, until he beat the sucker and was staying upright more often than not. His poor helmet in those days had more bangs and scrapes than you’d ever believe. And, after the first year of BMX bike camp, he started riding like a crazy man. While he was always careful to watch for cars, he started doing things like riding full speed down our driveway (which has a slope of between 35 and 40 degrees). He’s gone head over heels more than once. So, basically, I’ve had years to get use to the crash and burn maneuver and that means phone calls like the one today don’t make me freak out any longer.

However, news of the latest crash and burn does make me very thankful that we invested in a full face helmet for Joey. I think it’s saved us a trip or two to the ER.

So glad that he is ok and the bike took the brunt of the crash.

It turns out that he’s mostly ok. I am pretty sure he has a sprained wrist. We’re going to the doctor tomorrow.

YIKES. I give you a lot of credit for not freaking out, even if he DID have a full face helmet, and you’ve had practice at getting that kind of news! Glad he is OK.

We’ll see tomorrow if he’s really ok. I think he may have a sprained wrist.
