BlogHer’12 – Memorials, Friends, and Parties

My first full day in NYC for BlogHer’12 was slammed. We started the day with a trip to the 9/11 Memorial. I don’t even know how to put into words the feelings I felt and the memories I grappled with while we were there.  I guess I’ll let the pictures do the talking.
As we were headed in, we saw a few of the FDNY’s bravest heading out.
The new World Trade Center is awe inspiring.
I remembered my horror as I watched the buildings fall…knowing that those trapped inside were lost.
The Survivor Tree – the rough bark shows where the tree was cut off by the blast, the smooth bark is the new growth since then. It amazes me that it is growing and thriving despite the devastation…kind of like NYC itself.
The fabulously funky cycle designed to commemorate 9/11.

After we finished our visit to the memorial, the rest of my group headed out to find pizza for lunch and I headed back to the Hilton so I could get ready for the Trumpeting Media R&R Suite. Honestly, the fabulous ladies of Trumpeting Media couldn’t have been more wonderful and the sponsors of the R&R Suite and their Tweeting for Good program were incredible. Beaches Resorts, fitbit, evologie, Pepperidge Farms, Marley/HMDX Audio, Zulily, and aladdin all had causes they were donating to in return for the tweets we sent out. It was nice to feel like we were doing a little bit of good while we were having fun.

After the R&R Suite, Jennifer and I joined my dear friend Dora and her daughter Sunshine for a late lunch. We got the most phenomenal burgers at the Burger Joint NYC which is hidden away at the end of a tiny hallway in the lobby of Le Parker Meridien.
The Burger Joint is truly the definition of a hole in the wall. There is barely room to sit down and there is writing all over the wall but you can get a great burger, fries, and a drink for less than $15.
After lunch, we headed out for a little sight seeing…

Thursday evening was full too. I had dinner with a wonderful group of ladies from the Adoption, Loss, and Infertility community. We laughed and talked and ate and talked and discussed what qualified as a decent cupcake (I still say Magnolia Bakery is yummy) and talked some more. Sadly, my pictures from dinner aren’t that good (does anyone have any they’d like to share).

The rest of the night was filled with bubble dresses and the appearance of the 2012 cancer survivor inspired Beanis the crocheted Penis. Yeah, I went to The People’s Party and Queerosphere. They are two of the very best parties at BlogHer and the hostesses ROCK!
The lovely Leila from Don’t Speak Whinese and co-author of Goodnight, Pond poses for the camera. And, since the Bloggess couldn’t come to BlogHer this year, we made sure her cut out got a picture with the one balled Lance Armstrong tribute Beanis complete with a Live Strong bracelet. Yes, that is a crocheted penis. Yes, I made it. Yes, I do take orders.

You would think the only thing left after all that would be to collapse into bed. You’d be wrong. But, I’ve reached midnight on Thursday, August 2nd, so this post is over.

Nighty night y’all. See you on the flip side with tales of towering buildings, amazing words, and so much more.
