And, it started with a BANG!

If there is one thing you can say about our family vacations, it’s that they are never boring. In fact, you never know exactly what to expect. Here we are on only day two of our little road trip and I already have stories to tell.

Our road trip officially started yesterday, but my mom and I had left a day early because we had a committee meeting for the state board of the Women of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America). Our meeting was early on Saturday and we had planned to meet my dad and my boys at my sister’s house in Fort Mill, SC after our meeting was done. We figured we would get there in time for an early dinner and then we could drive for about 4 hours afterward. If everything had gone as planned, our drive today would have been short and sweet.

Everything didn’t go as planned.

About halfway through our meeting, my mom’s phone rang. I heard my dad’s voice and you could tell from my mom’s end of the conversation that something had happened.

Shortly after leaving our house in Cary with the boys, my dad said “Barring anything major, we should get to Aunt Keri’s around 4:30.” Marty, being the smart ass that he is, responded with “Hello jinx. Nice to see you again.” About 2 minutes later, something major happened.

My dad’s poor little car ended up being the middle of a great big vehicle sandwich. The pickup truck in front of my dad had stopped because he needed to turn left across traffic. My dad slowed down and was preparing to stop. Sadly, the car behind my dad did none of those things and plowed right into his rear end. My dad’s car was propelled into the pickup truck with such force that the pickup truck’s towing hitch was left bent and pointing at the ground. The front end of my dad’s car was crunched and the engine was leaking all kinds of fluid. Marty was in the front seat next to my dad. Marty’s knee slammed into the dashboard and, even though the seatbelt held him in place, his head went forward and slammed into his tablet computer. Joey and Gabe were in the back seat. Joey’s face also slammed into his iPad before the iPad went flying through the car and into the front seat. The iPad seems to be working but I have to check it out carefully and make sure no damage was done. Joey also has rug (or fabric) burn on his arm because he threw his arm up to try and protect his face and it hit the back of the front seat. Gabe’s underarm/upper chest is bothering him because he had the seat belt running under his arm instead of over his shoulder (now he sees why I won’t let him wear it that way). My dad swears up and down that he is 100% fine…and I haven’t seen anything to indicate otherwise. The only other interior damage was to two styrofoam coolers and, according to the police officer on scene, it smelled like the air bags had tried to go off (never knew that was a distinctive smell) but, since the didn’t go off, there must have been an equipment malfunction.

The wonderful officer gave my boys a ride home. That’s right, all three of my boys rode home in the back of a police car and I have yet to see a picture. My dad got a ride to pick up a rental car from the man who drove the tow truck who fetched his smashed car.

So, instead of meeting at my sister’s for an early dinner, my dad and the boys rolled in to her house at 7 pm…between 2 and 3 hours later than planned. I guess, all things considered, that isn’t too bad.

The chaos of day one did not guarantee smooth sailing on day two of our trip. Our drive down was punctuated by phone calls regarding a potentially serious health scare for a family member and multiple roadside pee breaks for one little boy who seemed to be able to pee as much as a race horse.

I’m desperately hoping the only tales I have from tomorrow are tales about all the fun we have at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. That’s right y’all…I’m going to Disney World!
